Financial Information and Statutory Accounts

Our approach to financial management

Barr View Primary and Nursery Academy is a publicly funded academy trust and an exempt charity. The academy is committed to the responsible, transparent and effective management of the public funds entrusted to it.

The Board of Trustees is responsible for ensuring that the academy’s resources are used appropriately, provide value for money and support the best possible educational outcomes for pupils.

The academy manages its finances in accordance with its funding agreement, the Department for Education’s Academy Trust Handbook, the Academies Accounts Direction, applicable company and charity law, and recognised financial reporting standards.

Annual report and audited financial statements

Academy trusts are required to prepare an annual report and financial statements for each financial year ending 31 August.

The accounts are approved by the Board of Trustees and independently audited by a registered external auditor. They include:

  • the trustees’ report and strategic report;
  • information about the academy’s structure, governance and management;
  • the academy’s objectives, activities and achievements;
  • a review of financial performance and reserves;
  • the governance statement and review of internal control;
  • the Accounting Officer’s statement of regularity, propriety and compliance;
  • the independent auditor’s opinion on the financial statements;
  • the reporting accountant’s conclusion on regularity;
  • details of the academy’s income, expenditure, assets, liabilities and reserves; and
  • supporting notes and disclosures required by the Academies Accounts Direction.

The external audit provides an independent opinion on whether the financial statements give a true and fair view of the academy trust’s financial position and financial performance for the period covered.

Understanding the information

Annual financial statements are retrospective. They report the academy trust’s financial performance and position for a completed accounting period and therefore should not be treated as a statement of its current in-year financial position.

The academy’s current financial position is monitored throughout the year through management accounts, budget monitoring, cash-flow forecasting and regular reporting to trustees. These internal reports may contain commercially sensitive, confidential or personal information and are not routinely published.

Figures reported in the statutory accounts may also differ from the academy’s management accounts because statutory accounts are prepared using prescribed accounting rules. They may include matters such as depreciation, pension valuations, restricted funds and capital funding.

Financial benchmarking

The Department for Education’s financial benchmarking service allows interested parties to compare the academy’s income and expenditure with that of other schools and academy trusts.

Please click here to view Barr View Primary and Nursery Academy’s financial benchmarking information.

Benchmarking information is drawn from previously submitted financial data and is not updated in real time. It will normally relate to an earlier financial year and may not reflect:

  • the academy’s current budget;
  • subsequent changes in pupil numbers or funding;
  • staffing changes;
  • current energy, premises and operating costs;
  • new grants or funding arrangements; or
  • recent financial decisions made by the Board of Trustees.

Comparisons should therefore be considered carefully and alongside differences in school size, pupil needs, staffing structure, building condition and the range of services provided.

Publication and regulatory requirements

In accordance with the Academy Trust Handbook, the academy trust’s audited annual report and accounts are:

  • submitted to the Department for Education;
  • published in full on the academy’s website;
  • filed with Companies House; and
  • made available to members of the academy trust and to anyone who requests a copy.

The accounts are published on the academy’s website by 31 January following the end of the relevant financial year. Copies are subsequently filed with Companies House within the statutory filing deadline.
