Science at Barr View Primary

Science

It is important that children are given the opportunity to explore and understand the world in which they live. Science at Barr View Primary Academy and Nursery is about giving children the tools to develop their ideas and ways of working that enable them to understand the world through investigation with independence, resilience and enjoyment.

At Barr View, we believe that a broad and balanced science education is the entitlement of all children, regardless of ethnic, origin, gender, class, aptitude or disability.

Intent

Science at Barr View Primary Academy aims to give all children a strong understanding of the world around them whilst acquiring specific skills and knowledge to help them to think scientifically, to gain an understanding of scientific processes and also an understanding of the uses and implications of Science, today and for the future.

Implementation

A clear and comprehensive scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum where teaching and learning should show progression across all key stages within the strands of Science. Children have access to key language and meanings in order to understand and readily apply to their written, mathematical and verbal communication of their skills. Children will use a range of resources to develop their knowledge and understanding that is integral to their learning and develop their understanding of working scientifically Where applicable links to Science will be made to develop the children’s topical learning.

Impact

Our Science Curriculum is high quality, well thought out and is planned to demonstrate progression. If children are keeping up with the curriculum, they are deemed to be making good or better progress. In addition, we measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:

▪ A reflection on standards achieved against the planned outcomes
▪ A celebration of learning for each term which demonstrates progression across the school
▪ Tracking of knowledge in pre and post learning quizzes
▪ Pupil discussions about their learning
