PSHE
Jigsaw PSHE is a comprehensive Scheme of Work that we follow at Barr View Primary Academy. It brings together PSHE Education, emotional literacy, social skills and spiritual development in a comprehensive scheme of learning.
Throughout our PSHE learning there are many opportunities given for the children to enhance their SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural) development. All of these pieces of learning are brought together to form a cohesive picture, helping children to know and value who they are and understand how they relate to other people in the world.
All year groups within our school follow the same theme each half term, these are known as puzzles. This creates a whole school focus which is brought into our celebration assembly each Monday morning with the thought of the week, this encourages children to reflect on that learning in their behaviour and attitudes throughout the week.
Within all Jigsaw lessons we follow a charter that encourages children to use kind, positive words, we take turns and always listen to our class mates views and we always have the right to pass in any Jigsaw discussion.
Each class will have its own Jigsaw Friend which is used as a ‘talking object’ in class discussions.

Content
There are six Puzzles each year with six Pieces (lessons) per puzzle. Every year group studies the same Puzzle at the same time, allowing for a whole school focus to be shared and celebrated each Monday and throughout the week. Each year group is taught one lesson per week and all lessons are delivered in an age and stage appropriate way so that they meet all children’s needs.

Being Me in my World
Children cover a wide range of topics with this puzzle including; a sense of belonging, welcoming others and being part of a school community, a wider community, and a global community; it also looks at children’s rights and responsibilities, working and socialising with others, and having a pupil voice.
Celebrating Difference
Children focus on similarities and differences. They learn about diversity and conflict. Children are encouraged and taught to accept everyone's right to be different. This puzzle also explores the concept of what bullying is and different types of bullying.
Dreams and Goals
Children think about their hopes and dreams during this puzzle. They think about what their goals for success and personal strengths are. They also think about different challenges that they may have to overcome and how to work together successfully as a team. Children learn about experiencing and managing feelings of pride, ambition, disappointment, success.
Healthy Me
Children cover the two main aspects of health: emotional health (relaxation, being safe, friendships, mental health skills, body image, relationships with food, managing stress) and Physical health (eating a balanced diet, physical activity, rest and relaxation, keeping clean, drugs and alcohol, being safe, first aid) in order for children to learn that health is a very broad topic.
Relationships
Children look at diverse topics such as families, friendships, pets and animals, and love and loss. A vital part of this Puzzle is about safeguarding and keeping children safe; this links to cyber safety and social networking. Children learn how to deal with conflict, their own strengths and self-esteem. They have the chance to explore roles and responsibilities in families.
Birmingham's RSHE Scheme
From Summer 2021, the law requires all primary age children to be taught Relationships and Health Education (RHE). RHE will put in place the building blocks needed for children to form and maintain positive and safe relationships, including with family, friends and online. School intends to use Birmingham City Council’s Relationships and Health Education programme to supplement the school’s current Jigsaw PSHE scheme.
